Sinan Canan

Biology graduate;
Doctor of Physiology;
Neuroscience enthusiast;
Student of nature;
Passionate about everything “chaotic and fractal”;
Fond of sharing every piece of knowledge and wisdom he learns with others;
Convinced that life is too long to be spent on a single occupation, and humans are too complex to devote their entire lifetime to just one craft;
In pursuit of wisdom and witnessing;
One who breathes like everyone else,
Whose heart beats,
Who enjoys eating and drinking;
Who has no skill more significant or prideworthy than being the father of Aybike, Metehan, and Melike Canan;
With assumptions, mistakes, and flaws,
A human among humans…

I was born in Ankara in 1972. After completing my primary, secondary, and high school education in Ankara, I graduated from Hacettepe University, Faculty of Science, Department of Biology in 1995. In the same year, I passed the Master’s entrance exam of the Department of Histology and Embryology at Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine and began my graduate studies there.

During my master’s studies, I focused on stereology and morphometry, and took part in the organizing committee and scientific training staff of two national courses held in Samsun: the 1st Course on Stereological Methods and Applications (1997) organized by Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Histology and Embryology, and the 2nd Course on Stereological Methods and Applications (1999) organized by the Department of Anatomy.

In 1997, during this period, I also became a founding member of the Stereology Association, established in Samsun under the leadership of the same department and serving as the Turkey branch of the International Society for Stereology (ISS). I am still an active member of this association and currently serve on its executive board.

At the end of my master’s education, I completed my thesis titled “Investigation of Neuron Number Changes in the Chick Hippocampus After Transient Cerebral Ischemia Using the Optical Fractionator Method.” I conducted the stereological analysis portion of this thesis during a two-and-a-half-month period in Copenhagen, Denmark, at the Bartholin Institute Neurological Research Laboratory, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Bente Pakkenberg and Prof. Dr. Hans J. G. Gundersen, supported by a scholarship from the Danish government. In 1998, after completing my master’s degree, I passed the doctoral entrance exam of the Institute of Health Sciences at Ondokuz Mayıs University and began my doctoral studies at the Department of Physiology, Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine.

During my doctoral studies, I actively worked as a member of both the organizing committee and the scientific training team in stereology courses conducted nationwide in collaboration with the Stereology Association.

I completed my PhD in 2004 with a dissertation titled “Investigation of the Interactions of Nitric Oxide and Calcium Channel Blockers in Penicillin-Induced Experimental Epilepsy.” A study I carried out within the scope of this research—“Analysis of Penicillin-Induced Experimental Epilepsy Using Spectral Methods”—was awarded second place in the Young Investigator Awards at the 28th National Congress of the Turkish Society of Physiological Sciences (24–27 September 2002, İzmir).

That same year, in May 2004, I began working as a Lecturer in the Department of Physiology at Başkent University Faculty of Medicine in Ankara. I was appointed Assistant Professor in April 2008. I resigned from the university in May 2009.

On April 1, 2010, I received the title of Associate Professor of Physiology. In the same month, I began working as a faculty member in the Department of Physiology at Turgut Özal University Faculty of Medicine. In May 2011, I was appointed as a faculty member in the Department of Physiology at Yıldırım Beyazıt University Faculty of Medicine, where I served as both a faculty member and the Head of the Department of Medical Physiology. I resigned from this position in 2015 and, in January 2016, I began working as a professor in the Department of Psychology at Üsküdar University.

In 2013, I founded [n]Beyin, a science communication initiative designed to share neuroscience knowledge with the general public, through which I organized educational scientific presentations and conferences for curious audiences from all professions across Turkey.

In 2017, I established AçıkBeyin Training and Consultancy in Istanbul. Through the AçıkBeyin YouTube Channel, I continue to structure all of my presentations within the framework of “Human Factory Settings” (İFA). Together with AçıkBeyin, our primary goal is to bring the scientific clues for building a meaningful and healthy life in the modern world to all people.
